THE TERRIBLE DEATH OF THE U.S. ARMY SECOND LIEUTENANT ROBERT M. VIALE OF BAYSIDE, HE MUST BE REMEMBERED.

 U.S. Army Second Lieutenant Robert M. Viale of Bayside, California, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on February 5, 1945, near Manila, Philippines.


Viale joined the Army in March 1941, and by February 5, 1945 was serving as a second lieutenant in Company K, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division. 

On February 5, 1945, during combat in Manila, Philippines, Viale smothered the blast of an accidentally dropped hand grenade with his body, sacrificing himself to protect the soldiers and civilians around him. He was just 28.

For his actions on February 5, 1945, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Viale is buried in Ocean View Cemetery, Eureka, California.

Albert Harold Rooks of Colton, Washington, a Captain in the U.S. Navy, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on February 4-27, 1942,  near Darwin to Koepang, Timor, Netherlands East Indies.


Rooks entered the United States Naval Academy as a midshipman in July 1910, and was commissioned in the rank of ensign upon graduation in June 1914.

 In 1941, Rooks took command of the heavy cruiser USS Houston (CA-30), flagship of the Asiatic Fleet. He took his ship through the difficult first three months of the Pacific War. 

During the period of February 4-27, 1942, while in action with superior Japanese aerial and surface forces, Rooks enabled the Houston to survive six air attacks and one major naval engagement. The ship did considerable damage to the enemy while being heavily damaged herself. 

For his actions on February 4-27, 1942, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Rooks died on the bridge of the Houston on March 1, 1942 as a result of enemy-inflicted wounds and went down with his ship. In 1944, the destroyer USS Rooks (DD-804) was named in honor of Captain Rooks.
